Anyone who has seen us live this last year will have seen Daniel behind the keyboard rack with us. Some of you will know his production skills with our friend Anneke van Giersbergen, Head control System and many other works. Others of you may know him as one of the most bad ass drummers working in Europe today. Our man Cardoso is such a complete musician who adds so much to our line up that the thought of working closer with him has been growing on my mind for some time. I simply love the way he plays and we share a common sensibility and understanding of the music and how it should sound. So I came to the conclusion that the strongest incarnation of Anathema, in the studio as well as on the road, is with Daniel in the line up, full time. I now feel that alongside the brilliant and rarely gifted songwriter John Douglas, who remains integral to what we do, with this addition we can now accomplish anything musically that we might imagine. Everywhere I look in the band I see great talent. It's important for the fans to know and understand that that the long standing Anathema songwriting team of Daniel Cavanagh, John Douglas and Vincent Cavanagh stays intact and remains strongly bonded and unchanged. Our philosophy is - if it isn't broke, don't fix it. This songwriting team is important to our continued growth. What Daniel Cardoso will bring is another string to our bow, a different musical talent and an opportunity for the band to push the music to its limit and accomplish anything musically that it wants to achieve. --- The move is welcomed by John Douglas, who said: "Daniel is one of the lads and we already have a great working relationship. I think he can add to our music even further and I welcome it. It's a bit like a football team and he's a very good addition to the squad." To quote Daniel Cardoso: "I remember being a teenager and being very disappointed to know that the drummer of one of my favorite bands left the band and didnt play on one of their albums. That band was Anathema and the album was Alternative 4. I was delighted when he rejoined and helped write the classic album 'Judgement'. So it's pretty exciting for me to get to this point where I'm bandmates with the great JD but at the same time I'm able to drop some tough beats here and there, when the music asks for it. Because thats why we're here.. for the music. And we do have a kickass team." --- So that's it folks, Anathema now has TWO drummers! One of them is a uniquely gifted musician who created awesome Anathema classics such as 'Storm before the calm', 'A fine day to exit' and 'Universal', - and the other is a bad ass incredible player for any songs that might require that different style that he can bring. Synth and keyboard duties in the live arena will still be largely handled by Daniel Cardoso with additional synth work from Vincent and Daniel Cavanagh and John Douglas - the musical roles changing according to the needs of the song. hello everyone. i write to you from poland on the weather systems autumn tour of europe as the beautiful month of october comes to us. a special time of year in so many ways, the most colorful of seasons and a time of warm memory and good feeling as our side of the earth begins to cool.sincerely, this is already shaping up to be the best tour we have ever done, but as i said, we always knew that it would be. its a great pleasure to be playing the songs to these audiences, and to have such a great crew working so hard for the band. special mention must go out to a remarkable guy, rob highcroft, our tour manager. he has been magnificent for us, and we're sorry that he has to leave the tour early due to unforeseen circumstances. he'll be missed, but then again, i'm pretty sure he will be back for more. i've honestly never met anyone like rob before; to be as cool, calm and collected as he is, as professional as he is, as driven and focussed, and all with good energy and positivity, all for a guy under 30. amazing.we all feel good to be on the road, and it's a long tour for us, our biggest ever in fact. the tour is so long that we have had to cut down our tendency for 2 hour 40 minute marathon concerts and bring them all in under two hours, just in order to ensure the band is able to bring the very best every single night without exception. from the reactions we're getting, no one is feeling short changed and there has been no complaints.a funny moment happened in copenhagen at lille vega, where due to my being five minutes late leaving the venue, i found myself locked inside the backstage area with several layers of locked doors between me and the rest of the band and crew. none of the venue people were reachable and in the end i was waiting well over an hour until 2 policemen, 2 firemen and a locksmith were called out and i could be set free. i was ready for a load of silly remarks about my being late leaving the venue, but no one said a word to me! a great venue as lille vega surely is, they ought to make very sure the venue is empty before locking up very strong fire doors and trapping unwary guitarists in backstage areas with nothing but stale bananas for emotional support. thanks again to rob for rescuing me.we are near the sea in poland and i think the opportunity for a seaside walk in autumn overlooking the north sea is too good to resist, so i will be off. best wishes and see you onstage somewhere soon. By Danny Cavanagh its been a week since we started the second part of our weather systems tour of europe, and as we all expected, everything has transpired exactly to plan. thanks to the fact that we were recording live album and DVD on the FIRST show of the tour, it really meant that we had to hit the ground running, and rehearse harder than we ever have before to be able to pull this off. thanks to our hard work and fantastic road crew, the first show was a great success for us, and the audience, as expected, were truly amazing. if i can spend a few minutes here speaking of the amazing job that the road crew did on the night of the bulgarian show, no matter what words i could use to compliment their work, it would fall short of truly expressing the job they did, or our gratitude. the stage, the lights and the sound were all truly stunning, as indeed was the work of our orchestral composer in england, and the plovdiv symphony orchestra. so a huge thank you to tonto, ian , paul, rob, pete, levon, dave, the string players and to the fans, thank you all for an unforgettable night. our man in the studio christer is now mixing the music for a 2013 release. more to come… Dan xxx
As you may know, on 22nd September the Ancient Roman Theatre in Plovdiv (Bulgaria) will host a truly special concert. The ruins of this spectacular building will provide a magical backdrop when Anathema take to the stage to perform their show alongside the string players of the Plovdiv Philharmonic Orchestra. After weeks of speculation we can now reveal that this unique concert will be recorded live and released on bluray in 2013 by Kscope. Speaking about the show, Daniel said that "recording a definitive Anathema DVD in Bulgaria, among some of the best fans in the world, has been on our agenda for some years. The fact that it's in this amazing location with an orchestral performance is surely a recipe for something special." They were formed in 2006 and released the highly anticipated Debut record "Living Seriously Damages Health" in 2006. It was played, recorded, produced and released by the band themselves, got a bunch of nice reviews and was later on described as the best Alternative/Post Rock album of the last years by German Rock Hard Magazine. After having played lots of concerts including a tours throughout Germany and Bosnia and Herzegowina, A Dog Called Ego recorded their second full length album called "Happy Happy Apocalypse" in 2011. Again without the help of a label or management the own studio became something like a second home for the three piece. And it still is. After releasing the "Don´t Vote For Us"-EP in summer 2012, the band locked down in their studio again to work on a new album to be released after the end of the world in early 2013. Anyone who went to the Paradiso gig in Amsterdam would have to admit that the audience was absolutely fantastic. That's the biggest crowd we've ever played to in western europe and we, in turn, gave everything we could to make it a special night. I think together, we made that happen. To have sold out the Paradiso and to havens such a high position in the Dutch charts is an achievement that band and management are very grateful for and proud of. There were so many special moments in the show, and I'm very glad that everything came together as well as it did. There were also lots lot of familiar faces in the crowd and many old friends came out to show their support. The day started out with a nice atmosphere and even an impromptu 'aerobics' session during the (usually monotonous) drum sound check. That got things off to a good start. After that I gathered together a fan club meeting and they were allowed in early, and then the venue started to fill up. I watched amplifier's set again and was again moved when hearing their song 'panzer' which I find a very nice track that hits the spot. A good band. Perhaps bring earplugs. They're just a little loud :-) The venue in the end filled to capacity and we did everything we could to fill it with energy too. Thanks as I say to a brilliant audience I can safely say that we as a band feel that to be the most prestigious show we've done so far on this tour and we are delighted with the way things are going. It was great to spend time chatting to friend after the show too, and I hope some new friendships have been made. Spring under a cherry blossom tree in Belgium.. and though the sun be hidden behind light cloud above, it fails not to inspire hope of a better day ahead. Welcome to the weather report from the most peaceful spot I've found so far on tour, underneath this cherry blossom tree @Trix, Antwerp. The drifting of cherry blossom leaves upon an April breeze is one of my favourite and most captivating moments in nature. A blessing indeed and an ideal place to have a little picnic and write a report for you good folk. Behind the excellent Trix venue lies a peaceful garden, complete with said cherry blossom and what I think are two weeping willows. Regardless of the names of these trees, it's a solace indeed to be here with coffee, fruits and a little bit of spring in the heart. Quieter moments such as these are a tonic from the intensity of some of the live performances, I suppose thanks to one thing, one can appreciate the other. The tour is going splendidly well and the album is being received equally well too, thanks to all you good people. We are also very happy with the atmosphere between band and crew and the good work that's being done to make all this happen. Last night was spent at a nice restaurant and then (though I went off to the hotel and missed out) a karaoke bar. Judging by the look on the faces of those that have surfaced, looks like fun was had by all. Vin looks fresh faced and full of good energy, as I've come to expect of him. Lee is in good sprits, and I've not seen the others yet. I was thinking today about my friends in leafblade and how a setting like this is so suited to their music.. The 'portrait' album to follow soon is as sweet as a summer afternoon.. Furthermore, plans are being put in place to get back together with our invaluable and incredible musical partner, Christer Andre Cedeberg, to make more music, and the sounds being made are that we might plan something a little harder edged.. Frankfurt, a special city. The city where a famous redlight district sprawls at the feet of the grand European Central Bank.. Where one of Europe's most impressive skylines can be seen for miles around.. A city where it's very pleasant to sit outside Starbucks on Große Bockenheimer straße with a tall Americano and watch the world go by.. One of my favorite pastimes here in Frankfurt.. A bit of Retail therapy today, breakfast and city centre shopping, very pleasant. Last night in Köln was great, we worked hard to get everyone in the room on our side and it paid off. Nice to see the audiences growing too.. And to hear positive fan reactions to the new album. Met some interesting people and am enjoying mingling with the audience after each show, spending a bit of time with some good characters. The road crew on this tour are almost all new to us and they have, each one of them, been fantastic. We're really grateful for their professionalism and easy going nature. The venue here in Köln is the same venue in 2005 (on tour with porcupine tree) in which the song 'the gathering of the clouds' was performed for the first time, in a form that I'm sure differs to the version released this week on WEATHER SYSTEMS. That night we were opening for porcupine tree on their 'deadwing' tour. Now it's our turn to play this excellent venue and to bring our own guests, the excellent 'amplifier' to open for us. It's nice to observe how anathema have changed and evolved since those days in 2005. Much in the way of good has happened, and we have, after much inner turmoil, managed to unify ourselves, get our act together and finally get back to releasing great albums again. Poland was a wonderful place to begin the tour and we thank every one of the special polish fans for playing their part. The band is already in full swing and sounding and playing well. This is a good feeling. It was a special moment to play untouchable part 2 and hear the Poles singing along passionately. Thank you. So now to Germany, a wonderful country, so close to my heart in many ways. My affection for this part of the world and this nation goes very deep, and I consider German people to be beautiful and kind and with good intention toward their European neighbours. The album has entered the charts in a high position in Germany too and I would like to thank all those business people (record company and concert promoters) for helping to create this success. I wish life, love and success to all, and I'll be returning with more news very soon.. Dan Xx

In fact I still have kept the plectrum from the show in 2010 at this very club, as it seemed to me to be the best show with the most receptive audience we had ever played to at that point. Something came together that night that has lived long in the memory. Can we top it? That remains to be seen, but I'm sure we'll do our best and the audience will play their part. There are some new songs that we are so looking forward to playing live.. These are exciting times for us and you too we hope.. Anathema will return in April with Weather Systems, their brand new studio album. Weather Systems is the follow-up to 2010’s We're Here Because We're Here. That album featured prominently in numerous end-of-year polls and the producer, Steven Wilson (Porcupine Tree), has described it as 'definitely among the best albums I’ve ever had the pleasure to work on.' The bar for Weather Systems has been set pretty high then but Daniel is certain that the album will exceed these lofty expectations, ‘it feels like we are at a creative peak right now, and this album reflects that. Everything from the production to the writing to the performances are a step up from our last album.’ He continues, ‘This is not background music for parties. All of us including Les tried our best to make the partnership work for many years through hard work together, but it was felt there was always a difficulty and the creative process was just not working. Sadly the split was inevitable. Great respect and thanks is due to Les for all his tireless work behind the scenes for the band. It has been a very difficult few months for everyone concerned as Les is a unique character and is still much loved by all in the band. You will have noticed that Daniel Cardoso has been performing in concerts over the festival season as a live player, but the writing and recording line up will remain the nucleus of the band as it always was. We all wish Les the very, very best for the future.

Falling Deeper continues where Hindsight left off. The album features brand new arrangements of songs and haunting melodies from our earliest days. It’s a mesmerising blend of the orchestral - majestic and at times ethereal - with beautiful vocal arrangements and our unique 'feedback' lead guitars, all centred around a grand piano and a huge rhythm section. All the layers work together to convey the haunting internal landscapes Anathema have become renowned for. This is an album which we hope will excite old and new Anathema fans equally. A fresh musical and lyrical approach has transformed songs such as Crestfallen, Kingdom and Sunset Of Age. This record reveals how, even from the very start, the band wrote melodies which would always have a universal magic and emotional impact. Another highlight of the album, Everwake, features the incredible voice of Anneke van Giersbergen and has brought a higher dimension to one of the band’s earliest and simplest acoustic pieces. The record has been produced by Daniel Cavanagh and was recorded and mixed by Andrea Wright at the legendary Parr St Studios, Liverpool (where the likes of Elbow, Coldplay and Echo and the Bunnymen have also recorded albums). The orchestral arrangements are from Dave Stewart who worked so successfully with Anathema on We’re Here Because We’re Here. It’s hard to believe it’s been seven long years since Anathema last offered up some new music. Yes, fans have been blessed with a couple of DVDs in that time (2004’s Were You There? and 2006’s A Moment In Time) and an album’s worth of reworked and rerecorded material (2008’s Hindsight). But technically, the long running Liverpool (U.K.) act hasn’t recorded anything remotely new since 2003’s A Natural Disaster. Anathema finally broken their self imposed silence with the release of their eighth full-length release We’re Here Because We’re Here. And quite simply, the seven years work the band have put into their latest album has been well worth the wait. In a lot of ways, We’re Here Because We’re Here is the next logical and natural progression from where Anathema last left listeners all those years ago. The band has well and truly matured as performers and songwriters in their time away, which is more than evident in the ten selections presented on their latest album. The opening track “Thin Air” is a perfect example of where Anathema has mastered the art of dynamics with an ever increasing layer of textures within their chosen progressive sound. Vincent Cavanagh’s vocals have certainly come a long way, with his performance sounding nothing short of stunning, while the song’s progressive build up, breakdown around the halfway mark and concluding with a climax that is on first listen quite complex, yet deceptively simple, beautifully written and masterfully executed. The tension filled “Summernight Horizon” is every bit as impressive with the addition of piano, driving drums and Lee Douglas’ ever present harmonized vocals alongside Cavanagh’s throughout the song, while the emotive piano driven/strings enhanced “Dreaming Light” is quite possibly the strongest ballad Anathema has penned to date.A strong Porcupine Tree influence can be heard within the piano led “Everything,” which is not surprising given that Steve Wilson is credited as mixer for the album. But despite the sound influence, “Everything” is still an amazing, catchy and beautiful tuned that it’s unmistakably from the likes of Anathema. The soothing “Angels Walk Among Us” (which eventually concludes with the Cavanagh spoken word follow up track “Presence”) follows a similar path to the former, while “A Simple Mistake” ebbs and flows throughout its lengthy running time, with the varied layering of vocals carrying the first half of the song, before injecting a heavier guitar presence in its place in the latter half of the track. “Get Off, Get Out” is by far the album’s heaviest tracks with its weighty guitar tones, driving rhythms and prominent Porcupine Tree-like chorus, while the slower paced/Pink Floyd-like “Universal” drifts along the same theme in the musical sense, before making a transition toward its tail end. Finishing up the album is the lengthy instrumental piece “Hindsight”, which in ways that that are a little hard to describe, seem to reinforce the overall positive feel and outlook of the album, both lyrically and musically. In hindsight, both A Fine Day To Exit (2001) and A Natural Disaster are precursors to what the band really wanted to achieve with We’re Here Because We’re Here. Both are great albums, but definitely experimental efforts that have helped the band take things to a whole new level on this album. Anathema has released some truly mesmerizing albums in their 20 years together, and even a couple of classics. But in the here and now, We’re Here Because We’re Here is undoubtedly their strongest and most satisfying release in the last decade, and an album that will definitely make its way into my top ten albums list for 2010. Alongside My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost, Liverpool’s Anathema was part of the unholy trinity that largely defined the UK’s death/doom/gothic metal scene in the nineties. Although none of the three bands has stood still musically, it’s Anathema that has perhaps shifted the furthest from their metal roots and We’re Here Because We’re Here continues their rebirth as a truly progressive rock band for the modern era. Rating: 4/5 Having already been on the shelves for some time in Europe and having gained many plaudits, the album now has an overdue Stateside release and American fans can finally revel it its many treasures. You will find very little on this album that could even be remotely called heavy metal. There might be an occasional moment that references the mellow, acoustic aspect of Opeth, but that aside, the closest comparisons are those of progressive rock’s big guns old and new, like Pink Floyd and Porcupine Tree, in addition to the odd sideways glance towards alternative rock acts such as Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins. With much of We’re Here Because We’re Here being built around gentle, lilting acoustics, it could easily become an incredibly dull record to listen to. The fact that it is actually quite beautiful is a huge tribute to its creators. The overwhelming success of the album is achieved not only by some sublime songwriting, but by the way the core songs are embellished, infusing them with a theatrical sense of the grandiose and otherworldly. Anathema has a firm grasp on dynamics and the ability to craft music, which takes the listener on an intriguing journey, often to an unexpected destination. With far too many modern albums consisting of one big song and a shed load of filler, it’s utterly refreshing that this release is so consistently strong from beginning to end. In fact, it’s a record that demands to be listened to a whole to be fully appreciated. That said, the mid-album spoken word interlude of “Presence” is excellent, both as a standalone track and as a scene setter for the following “A Simple Mistake” which is a quite startling affirmation of just how far Anathema has come. Elsewhere, the sinister, piano-driven “Summer Night Horizon” is a feast of multi-tracked vocals and inventive orchestrations, building magnificently from a gentle intro to a maelstrom of jarring guitars and off-kilter rhythms at its conclusion. As is best illustrated on the wonderful “Dreaming Light”, this is an evocative and atmospheric album; sometimes dark and threatening, often stark and fragile. The fact that it remains as uplifting and rewarding as it is, says everything about just what a special band Anathema has become. (released June 7, 2011 on The End Records) READ THE REVIEW

Our fans are our number 1 priority and so as not to let you down, we’ve generated enough support to keep most of our American Dream alive but this does still mean a few unavoidable changes to the plan. We wanted to let you know that instead of the full band appearing, myself and Danny will now be performing acoustically. We’re really excited as it’s our first club show tour in the States and Canada and with absolute respect for fans who have bought tickets, we want to go over and give you a great show. Even though we’ll be focussing mainly on the newer material we’re still ready to play some of the old songs if people want to hear them! In fact, to us, these acoustic gigs are more special and exciting in a way – they are less structured and more improvised than a full band show – there’s room for a bit of freedom on the night. Additionally, due to the unprecedented style of these shows we have decided to record these rare acoustic performances for forthcoming special releases and exclusive online content. We really feel this is just the beginning of Anathema’s US story and Danny and I are looking forward to meeting everyone. We will be on the merchandise stand after every performance to greet you all and we will do our best to make sure the full band gets to tour in the USA as quickly as possible, perhaps even headlining before the end of the year. Whilst we realise this is a significant change from the original plan and we are disappointed that we can’t perform with the full band, we are thrilled that we can still play to our fans in the USA and Canada. We had literally hundreds of entries for our design-a-tshirt competition and have been very impressed by some of the amazing creative skills we’ve seen. As you can imagine, it was very difficult to make a shortlist of potential winners. But there can only be one winner and we are delighted to announce that this is: Bartosz Piekarniak from Ireland with the design entitled ENERGY. From Alta, far up in Northern Norway, singer and music maker Petter Carlsen released his debut album “You Go Bird” in August 2009 which entered the charts at #14. Indeed, Danny Cavanagh states that ”once I heard Petter Carlsen's incredible voice and beautiful songwriting, as well as his warm personality, I always felt that he would be connected to and part of the inner circle of Anathema for a long time to come. Quite apart from being a great friend, he is one of the most talented musicians I have ever met in my life.” Petter's reaction when we confirmed him on the tour clearly shows that the feeling is mutual: “To be invited on this tour with Anathema is just fantastic. I’ve been a big fan for 16 years and all their albums from Eternity and on, have “moved in” to my CD-player. Their music is one of my greatest inspirations. The band are giving you virtually free reign on what you design but Jamie had a few pointers on what the band is hoping to see in the winning shirt: ‘Something that is eye-catching and original. I like intricate clever design and symmetry, but also simple striking realistic stuff, so both extremes. What makes a good t-shirt to me is one which incorporates an image that is synonymous with the music, that’s cleverly thought through or skillfully designed. I’d like the design to work with a variety of different coloured t-shirts. It is with regret that we have to announce that Anathema's scheduled show in Hristo Botev Hall in Sofia, Bulgaria on May 6th has been cancelled. The promoter is in breach of contract and it is impossible for the show to go ahead. Some of you may be familiar with this story as this is not the first time that this promoter has let people down. As always this decision was out of Anathema's hands. They were looking forward to their first gig in Bulgaria. The band wish to apologise to their Bulgarian audience. Vincent had this to say: "It is a big disappointment for us. We've been waiting years for this opportunity to finally play in Bulgaria. I had a great feeling about that one. I was looking forward to sharing a new and unique experience over there but unfortunately it wasn't to be this time. We hope it will be possible to reschedule a Bulgarian gig to coincide with the European tour in the Autumn" But, as one door closes, another one opens… Anathema are very happy to announce that three dates have now been added to their Turkish tour at the beginning of May. The dates are: 4th May - Antalya, Genclik Senligi 5th May - Eskisehir, 222 Park 6th May - Bursa, Resimli Also an extra date has been added to Anathema's trip to Russia: 16th May - Ekaterinburg - Teleclub Tickets are on sale now. |
